Women And Children First, of Course

What's a Republican man to do in the face of a real humanitarian and economic crisis? Kick the women and children overboard!

In an attempt to mitigate the partisan divide, President Obama caved to Republican demands to cut programs from the stimulus plan. The proposed Medicaid Family Planning State Option would allow basic health care for millions of women and would extend safety-net coverage to those losing jobs and health insurance plans in this difficult economy. And we all know that preventive care (like the kind offered in this plan) is the way to go to achieve wellness and save big bucks.

On the bright side, President Obama signs the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act today. As Kelly mentioned last Friday, this new law addresses pay discrimination based on gender, race, national origin, religion, age and disabilities. Below is a portion of Obama's statement this morning from The Washington Post:

It is fitting that with the very first bill I sign - the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act - we are upholding one of this nation's first principles: that we are all created equal and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness.

Because while this bill bears her name, Lilly knows this story isn't just about her. It's the story of women across this country still earning just 78 cents for every dollar men earn - women of color even less - which means that today, in the year 2009, countless women are still losing thousands of dollars in salary, income and retirement savings over the course of a lifetime.

In the end, that's why Lilly stayed the course. She knew it was too late for her - that this bill wouldn't undo the years of injustice she faced or restore the earnings she was denied. But this grandmother from Alabama kept on fighting, because she was thinking about the next generation. It's what we've always done in America - set our sights high for ourselves, but even higher for our children and grandchildren.

Take action on the Medicaid Family Planning State Option by going to Planned Parenthood or call the White House at 202.456.1111.

Yeah, about normal for me,

Yeah, about normal for me, lol. Doesn't help my mood much that the shots I have to give myself, which supposedly are to keep me healthy, are making me sick as all get-out right now, and at work to boot. There's more behind my frustration right now than AO and minor tech glitches, so I hope you'll forgive my outburst. I'll do my level best to not make a habit of it. Wink

In this case, it looks like

In this case, it looks like AO already knew about the work-around that I'm just now learning about, hence why AO's posts always get through, and the rest of us end up trapped in SPAM hell for a day or so.

CA_Medicine_Woman's picture

Okay, between the spam

Okay, between the spam software and me not knowing how to work around it, this explains a lot of what I was seeing. I don't normally post things with an eye towards getting around security settings, so I'm a little bit naive about such things. I also tend to focus on one story to rant about, but this week had a few I thought were pretty important, hence all the links.

Would it help if I broke multiple stories up into separate posts, or would that flag me as well?

we use "Akismet Spam" its

we use "Akismet Spam" its designed for wordpress.

i think its a pretty utilitarian process, and doesn't have the ablitiy to filter out "content" as such.

My feeling is it looks for typical spam-ish type characteristics, like too many links in a post, links with lots of characters ghdsoslkdjfsoisjgl, which the youtube links tend to have.

its been pretty good but i've noticed its been catching a lot of you lately. Tami is off today, but we'll see what we can do about this, becuase it is a pain in the ass for us too.

To unblock you we need to go through all the other real spam and pick out the real comments.

Hi CA, I think you might be reading a little more into it. It blocked some of my comments too and I was only trying to send Julia a popular funny "Do Ya Like Waffles" youtube video in response to the L-word waffle scene.

I'm sure it's just a random blocking....I don't think there's a conspiracy among SPAM blockers to leave out liberal comments.

Thank you for turning what

Thank you for turning what was an interesting and pleasant place for women to come and discuss the issues important to us into a hate filled neoconservative platform against the ever dreaded black man. We really appreciate you bombarding all of us with your homophobia and racism every day, posting your links to hate groups and neocon political sites, and so forth.

Since the rest of us can't post anything without "the spam catcher" flagging it, but all of your hate filled posts ALWAYS make it into the threads, I will now assume this site supports your agenda.

CA_Medicine_Woman's picture

Just out of curiosity, why is

Just out of curiosity, why is "the spam catcher" blocking posts about LGBT rights issues in Kansas and Georgia, but not right wing propaganda and hate speech with links to neocon web sites?

I would be very curious to see the source code on that utility, as well as to know who wrote it, since I've never seen a spam blocker with a political agenda before.

Thanks Rusty! It's the only

Thanks Rusty! It's the only way to debate ideas and learn from each other.

Unfortunately, my patience runs out quickly when a bigot posts something clearly offensive to myself and/or others, especially when they do not feel any need to apologize to those whom they offend. I gave two opportunities for clarification and/or correction, and just got more right-wing conspiracy theories linked to people who don't think very highly of the LGBT population, a few of which probably needing their meds adjusted, not to mention their tin-foil hats.

Oh well, I tried.

CA_Medicine_Woman's picture

I do not expect, nor would I

I do not expect, nor would I any longer accept, and apology. Like I said, your lack of credibility is now firmly established with me. That you do not see how your statement, particularly the wording you used, was homophobic and racist and offensive to those other than your target demonstrates your intent and underlying motivations for your constant attacks on Obama.

I know it probably isn't obvious from my picture, but I'm mixed race, and I have African American blood relatives. I am also a proud member of the LGBT population in the United States. I am also a progressive populist.

What part of your original post would you think I wouldn't be offended by?

Attention Commentors, It

Attention Commentors,

It seems our spam catcher is periodically editing out some of your comments and thus turning you into spam.

We are not super sure why this is happening. It seems to occur when you post youtube links, but clearly it doesn't happen all the time.

So if you are finding that your comments are not posting send us a message through the contact form. We then have to go in and manually unspam you -- which i just tried to do, but i'm not sure if your de-spammed comments appeared in the threads or not.

So I just want to make sure you guys know we are not censoring comments. this has been happening with a bunch of you; kelaky, itty, oakly, CA, et al.

Until we build out a private membership network, where everyone logs in and creates a profile, our site is open to comments. So its necessary for us to have this particular spam catcher activated on the site other wise we'd be bombarded with Viagra and mortgage ads... those bastards.

What do your accusations have

What do your accusations have to do with the link I posted?

Speculative – yes. I really don't know what he does in his private life. But I do think the murder of Trinity Church gay choir leader Donald Young is more than mysterious and should be a concern to the gay community. The whole case was completely hushed up. I also think the legal harrassment of Larry Sinclair was beyond the pale.

As for apologizing – I apologize only when I feel I've wronged someone. Not when others demand it.

Word from the flying monkey

Word from the flying monkey right blogoshpere is that GOP Senators intend to put secret holds and to filibuster the stimulus package until all of the spending measures are removed, especially the job training and extension on UI benefits. Given Harry Reid's willingness to kill any legislation if the GOP even hints at a filibuster, the stimulus package might not make it out of the Senate unless he grows a spine. There are not enough Democrats and independents to stop a filibuster.

If the bill fails, so does the Obama presidency, not to mention our economy and political stability.

This was your remark last Wednesday evening.

It is one thing to speculate or comment on a person's sexual preference in a positive or neutral way, but your remark clearly used your interpretation of Obama's sexuality in a way intended to be negative and hurtful. The comment also had a very serious racist undertone to it as well. Despite having been told this was clearly offensive, you never apologized.

Until you sincerely apologize for such a hateful statement, you have less credibility with me than Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter. I've tried being nice, but no more.

I don't have any inside

I don't have any inside information, but I think the ReThugs are being set up to take a big rhetorical hit. Obama and the Democrats look like they are bending over backwards to accommodate them. It's about public perception.

If I was writing his first address to the nation as president, it would go a little like this:

My fellow Americans, you sent me to Washington with a clear message—you are sick of the partisan bickering. In a willingness to keep the promise that I made to you to be president of all Americans, I reached out to Republicans in the spirit of bipartisanship and was met with a clenched fist.

The Democrats in the House and Senate rewrote the Stimulus Package in an attempt to satisfy Republican concerns. They added additional tax cuts and removed some of the spending the Republicans opposed. And still, not one Republican voted in favor of jobs and saving our economy. I come to you today to announce a new strategy:

I won! The motherfrackers had their chance, now they can suck it and do it my way.

Obama points to the Republican side of the joint session and says:

You can suck it and you can suck it. And Lush Rumball can really suck it.

(I shoulda sent in my resume to work as a presidential speechwriter.)

Grace, I know we want what we

Grace, I know we want what we want NOW (especially after the last 8 years in the wilderness) but I just pulled this from Talking Points Memo:

Obama Plans to Get Family Planning Aid Done Soon
By Elana Schor - January 29, 2009, 4:58PM

"...A source present at today's White House signing ceremony for the Lilly Ledbetter bill tells me that President Obama gave assurances that the family planning aid would be done soon -- perhaps as soon as next week, when the House is set to take up a spending bill that would keep the government funded until October.

"Obama emphasized that the family-planning aid "makes the budget look better, it's a money saver," the source said. In fact, removing the need for Medicaid waivers for family planning saves states an estimated $700 million over 10 years."

I think waiting an extra week is OK.
