Boob Tube: The Pot of Suck at Rainbow’s End

You know that gnashing, wailing, sighing sound you heard late Wednesday evening? (No, it wasn’t a delayed reaction to the “bisexual” Ikki twins both picking surfer dude Trevor and leaving sweet, lesbian single mom Rebekah out in the cold on the A Double Shot at Love finale; that was woefully predictable.) Alas, it was the sound of the lesbian nation mourning Team Rainbow. After a strong showing this season on Top Chef: New York, chef Jamie was sent packing on this week’s episode. I know. Boo. Since she made it to the final six, it’s possible that we’ll at least get to see her again in the finale as a sous chef for one of her fellow competitors. How fun would it be to see Jamie and the soulfully kooky Carla rocking the kitchen together one last time? (If that whiner/quitter Leah doesn’t get the boot next week, I will eat my own bonnet! And by bonnet, I mean chocolate.)

At any rate, it’s only been two days and I already miss my weekly Jamie fix. If you find yourself in the same boat, you can at least console yourself with this recent interview she did with The New York Blade. R.I.P. Team Rainbow. Long may your name ring in the halls of our people, for you bore the mark of awesomeness!

But where one Boob Tube-y door closes, a window opens… and this time around, that window is called: Calzone. If you missed this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, you can watch the Sapphically significant final few minutes right here:

Considering that this is the first scene these two have ever had together, at first I felt a little gypped of time here: no blossoming chemistry or flirting leading up to this moment? What gives?! But the appeal of Dr. Arizona Robbins is undeniable, and this scene is really well-played. After the incredibly disappointing way in which the Callie-Erica relationship was handled (and axed without warning) earlier this season on Grey’s, I confess that I have zero confidence in this show’s ability to do this storyline well. I mean zip! But, at least for the time being, I find myself pleasantly surprised (and expecting a scalpel to the heart by season’s end).Boob Tube News

Word came down this week that fan fave Ugly Betty will be pulled in March due to declining viewership. In its place, ABC will be testing a new show, In the Motherhood. While the debut of any new show starring Megan Mullally is cause for celebration, I want my Betty! Industry buzz has it that the show will likely be back in May, but may not live to see another season. WWWD?

To Watch For Next Week…

Sunday! Kelly Wentworth moves in on Tibette's territory on The L Word (Showtime, 9 p.m.). Desperate Housewives returns with an all new episode (ABC, 9 p.m.).

Wednesday! The Top 36 contestants are revealed on American Idol (Fox, 8 p.m.). Cybil Shepherd guest stars as the mother of a serial killer suspect on Criminal Minds (CBS, 9 p.m.).

Thursday! The crossover craziness (along with the courtship of Calzone!) continues on Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 9 p.m.) and Private Practice (ABC, 10 p.m.).

Friday! Lesbian geek squad, take note! Friday nights are more chock full of chicks kicking ass than ever before with the return of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on its new night (Fox, 8 p.m.), followed by the series premiere of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse starring Eliza Dushku (Fox, 9 p.m.). Cap it all off with a brand new episode of Battlestar Galactica (SciFi Channel, 10 p.m.) and I’d call that a sci-fi wet dream lineup like never before seen!

Jules,
I couldn't get the link to work for the blade interview. Is the problem at my end or yours?

Thanks for keeping us up to date. You are much more user friendly than scrolling through the 700 odd channels on my cable directory. Smile

Best Mary McDonnell quotes this week:

President Roslin: I will use every cannon, every bomb, every bullet, every weapon I have down to my own eye teeth to end you. I swear it! I'm coming for all of you!

Dr. Dixon: Cows are squeezed tightly in a shoot before they're slaughtered.

I wish I had the willpower to keep boycotting Joss but he sucks me in. I still keep hoping we'll see the return of Tara in Buffy Season 8- I really need to let go (as evidenced by my username)! And yes, Season 7 was brutal. To be honest I barely remember any of it.

I'm terrified of eels, so I had kind of the same reaction. Only mixed with a wee bit of "Ha! My species EATS your kind!"

Julia, what did you think about the skinning of the eels in the Quick Fire Challenge for Top Chef this week? I was alternately fascinated and appalled.

Well, Christina Cox alone is reason to watch just about anything. Even I caught a few episodes of her vampire show. And I couldn't remember what night or time it was on. Smile

I tried to watch The Closer

I tried to watch The Closer once, and couldn't get into it. As a rule, I pretty much don't dig cop dramas. (Unless they are Dexter or star Christina Cox in the company of undead Americans.)

I wasn't on speaking terms

I wasn't on speaking terms with the Whedon and his ilk for about two years after the DOT debacle. But by then I missed Buffy so much that I forgave him.

Still kinda irked about how lame Buffy season seven was, though...

I liked that clip, I don't

I liked that clip, I don't watch "Grey's" but I did think Arizona came across very well. I might actually tune in if she were a major character and hooks up with Callie.

I agree on the Jamie cut. I am so annoyed, but not really surprised. You just know the producers are keeping Leah & Hosea on there because they're hoping they'll fuck- cause that'd be good for ratings. Plus, I saw it coming from the moment Jamie pulled the knife for the dish she hated. Let's be honest though, Jamie's had her head up her ass for the past few weeks. I bet on the season end wrap up we'll find out she was having girlfriend issues or something.

Jules, you have to start watching and recommending "The Closer". I love how this show blends cop drama with humor and Kyra Sedgwick is simply amazing.

I stopped watching Grey's

I stopped watching Grey's after Hahngate but... I am still interested in show, despite my best efforts not to be. It's so weird... I mean, they have these moments of brilliance with Callie and Erica, paired with what seemed to be genuinely awkward moments (not cute tv awkward, I mean, "I don't know what the fuck I'm writing so I'm just going to go with it" awkward) and now it's back to... weird. Their first scene together? Really? At first glance it seemed, to me at least, indicative of their devaluing of lesbian relationships ("Who cares that they just met? I don't invest much in these lesbians anyway, in fact I'm cool with sending one out to the parking lot, never to return...") but then I remember that Mer and Der, Grey's central romance, had a one night stand in the pilot. So... I'm thinking this is more their attitude towards sexuality than sexual orientation?
