Design on a Rapidly Devaluing Dime Part 6: Put It in My Box

It is apparent that back in the 1920s, people didn’t own things. If they did, they would have built more storage than the open, one-foot-deep nook in my apartment. Oh, if only I still darned my socks and knitted my own sweaters, I wouldn’t need storage at all.But I do. Badly. I love things. I love to store my things so I don’t have to look at them. I need places for my things.

So, here is my solution: upholstering a box is really, really easy. Do you have a box? Is it boring? Try upholstering it with some cheap accent fabric to make it suck a lot less.

Unfortunately, I left my box at my mom’s place after college, so I had to build my own. Once I had my skeleton made, I bought about $40 worth of padding (or batting, whatever you want to call it), and just over two yards of fabric for $25. I stapled padding to the sides of the box and used triple padding on the top to make a cushy seat. A few staples will hold it firm before you put on the fabric.

Oddly enough, the actual cutting and sewing only took an hour or two. The Girlfriend and I left the base of the box bare, and decided to add some wooden feet to get it off the ground. Then, we measured five pieces of fabric to cover the remaining sides of the box, leaving two or three inches extra on every side for the sewing and stapling. We stapled the fabric to the bottom, then sewed the sides with a ladder (invisible) stitch. One thousand staples later, we had an ottoman bench.

We made ourselves a box big enough to fit all of the winter clothing I never want to look at again, and used the leftover fabric to cover the uncovered “closet” in our den. Hence, the ultimate storage solution. Begin box jokes: now.

Good looking box! Really! Add some small casters and a nice tray - you've got yourselves a coffee table... and those "invisible" stiches? Yeah, right! Made an entire set of curtains with stitch witchery - okay, they were for my son's college apt, but they looked pretty good, if I do say so myself Smile Thanks for the instructions...

Every woman needs a box,
