Slumber Party: L Word Remorse

Our bloggers Amy and Julia are back with another audio installment of their newly titled, Slumber Party. (Elizabeth's computer is on the fritz, and will hopefully be back on for next party.) This week the girls download and decompress about the end of the L.

Good point. I want my tribidism! I think the pressure for more sex was brought out in the 5th season when the male exec slammed Jenny's script down and said, "More sex! I want more sex!" Then he made the scissoring gesture. I think they were letting us know about that pressure. Remember the scenes where presumably Jenny's imagination was trying on the the different hook-ups?

Gay men live their sexuality differently than we do, IMO. Gale Harold (Brian) took a lot of risks in that part as did the writers and producers. They were depicting male sexuality and threw off many of the criticisms about the show's graphic sexual nature.

Who knows what happened with L Word sex, but LH did give good orgasms.

Thanks for starting my morning off with the funny, Amy. And thank you for our one-on-one therapy session this week -- I feel like you have successfully lanced the blight of my disappointment and borne away much of my bitterness.

QAF was such a great show!

QAF was such a great show! It's everything the L Word should have been: characters you come to really know and love (and who stay constant throughout the whole series), smart storylines, a strong gay community identity, Brian Kinney Smile
I think Shane was trying to be the Brian Kinney of TLW, but she just didn't have the same appeal, or enough sex.
I don't know why TLW didn't, if nothing else, have as much sex as QAF did. Knowing the straights, I think that lezzie sex is thought of as more appealing than two (or three or ten) men fucking...so why was TLW so watered down? Lezbeth: if your theory is true, and I believe it is, that whatever gives the execs "a stiffy" is what gets airtime, then they should've had all those glamazons doing it left and right and up and down. Instead, they did some heavy petting and had sex behind some sheer curtains with the glow of candles blocking the camera's view. Where was the scissoring!?

I totally agree on QAF...good

I totally agree on QAF...good story arcs for all characters (story arcs were woefully lacking in The LWord.) QAF producers gave us characters that weren't all beautiful representations of hunky hollywood types. It was not set in LA which gave it more authenticity (I thought).

Part of the challenge for truly representational Lesbian-themed shows is that the lack of a Lesbian titillation factor may make it hard (so to speak) for execs to go for anything that doesn't give them a stiffy.

The reality show is a good

The reality show is a good idea. Logo has done Curl Girls and Gimme Sugar. There was a "bachelor" themed show. I can't remember her name, but a MtF Transsexual was the availablette and one of her suitors was FtM trans. Interesting dynamics. Currently, RuPaul's Drag Race is making its final lap (so-to-speak).

Problem with Curl Girls and Gimme Sugar was the high drama to feed interest in the show. I watched it, but actually related better to L Word themes and characters than to those shows.

I'd go for "survivor" or a lesbian habitat for humanity project or cross country road rally. I'd love to see a non-hetero paradigm in a reality show. (RuPaul's show is a hoot!)

You guys mention that the

You guys mention that the creators defend their glamazonion lesbo representation by stating that "it's tv. what do you expect?" I really find this reasoning lazy and cowardly. I wish that the L Word could have been as bold and groundbreaking as "Queer as Folk" was. I know the acting was less than phenomenal in the first 2 seasons and some of the dialogue was a bit cheesy at times, but it was a great show from start to finish. It had crazy stuff like character development and interesting plots that made sense. I had high expectations for the L Word after QAF and I may never forgive Showtime for letting me down....until season 3 of The Tudors, anyway....
