All I have to say about this is

The hell with ALL the gay ppl that are bashing her,she is going to take alot of shit now the rest of her life and more then likey her country music life as she knew it is over. And IMHO k.d Lang was never country(never will be).

Robin Rigby's picture

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kd_lang

Whether or not kd started out her career as a country singer is not really open to interpretation.  She did.  See here that Ingenue was her first 'pop' record and that was 1992.  I remember seeing her in cowboy duds on an album cover back in the 80's in a record store, before I knew who she was.

Whether you were aware of her and her music prior to Ingenue is something only you would know.

Grace Moon's picture

this i hope is my final opinion on Chely... tho prob not.

I think what all the bashing is about, is NOT that she came out. I don't think anyone is making any fun at the fact she came outl. Its HOW it was handled by her publicist (with her consent), which includes her portrayal in her press release.

Her coming out was "hyped" to the press, if you are going to "hype" something to our community with the intention of making bank on products you are about to launch, then the community is going to scrutinize your motives.

I don't think people want to feel manipulated -- and there was manipulation in the way Bragman handled this whole affair -- unfortunately creating a very divided response from the community.

the bashing

It looks like the community on this site was divided — not so much on other gay/lesbian sites like AfterEllen, The Advocate, Curve, Dorothy Snarker — the blogs and comments on those sites were generally pretty postive.

Heather Hogan's review of her book on AfterEllen definitely made me want to read it and I usually blow off memoirs.

[edited to add: I wrote this before I read Dorothy Snarker today. Wow.]

I plead the final myself....forest for the trees

We're not divided here, Rusty, on the most important part of all this. We have the best regards for Chely on her proclamation of public gayness. Our" division" that you state, was our differing opinions on our perceptions of how she did it. You, on one hand, look at a 'forest' that is all inclusive - music, book, gay. I, on the other hand, look at a gay forest with the music and book as incidental - soft woods among hard. I don't like manipulation - period. I feel that it would have been more LGBT effective if she had written the book about her journey, made her public statement, and gone on the book circuit. After some months come out with the cd. On the purely business side of all this it would have made more sense to spread this out for 'larger' coverage.I mean, goodness, it's been five years since she put out an album. What's another six months gonna hurt? Six months of talk shows, interviews, book shops, etc.? And you know what? Chely, celebrity wise, is just not that big a deal on the world stage of awareness. On the morning of the 5th she was in the top ten for trending searches on the internet. By noon she was no where to be found.

I read that Rodney Crowell produced this album for her. That is interesting in of itself for Texan Rodney is a rebelish 'mainstream' country music person. Although, he does have a slew of country connections (first wife was a Cash, signed with a multitude of labels, buds with Vince Gill and Keith Urban, prolific writer). Which brings me to the thorn under my saddle - calling herself the first "mainstream" country musician to come out. My first interpretation of that statement is that she is raising herself to the ultimate level of country music - above the likes of k d lang. Now, I'm also tired of people splitting hairs with the timing of k d's coming out - whether she was country or not at the time. k d lang has never kept her sexuality hidden. Sure, she didn't make some public statement during the 'country' time table, but goodness knows, everyone knew she was a lesbian when she was wearing cowboy boots. You know, this part just pisses me off.

I love music - all types if it's good. I honestly had totally forgotten about Chely Wright. When I youtubed her to refresh my memory I found "Shut Up and Drive" and "Single White Female." I can remember not being impressed with either - especially "Single White Female." While the tune is catchy, that is one of the most hetero tunes you'll ever hear. I'll listen to her new tunes, but not because she's gay. At this point, I listen in spite of it.

We, the gays, are at a time in America as no other. We need 'celebrities' that come out for the sake of being gay. Come out, make a statement, and then pursue your livelihood.

You know the one thing that has risen to the forefront in my experience with working for gay equality? The fact that so many people who worked on that campaign were not emotionally connected to it.....most were heterosexuals hired to do a job.....and they didn't do it well. Your soul has to be involved with this quest, otherwise, you come across as just another American trying to make a buck.

Thanks, I feel better. Wish we could go get a coffee and shoot the breeze about nothing.....

Amen, sister! (this was to Kelly Mac on the bottom)

I am so glad you're commenting on this - you are the only one here with first hand knowledge of chely - and you're in the industry.

I don't get the things she's saying - she's making some 'pretty broad' statements that I just don't think are true....like being the first and such! She also said in another interview that she came to her realization two years ago. Okay, so why didn't she come out then? Why did she wait until the book and cd coming out also. Went to her website - the only things she has listed under her Tour section are "performance and book signing" gigs.

not all bad

deedee, there are some lesbian / gay sites who aren't slamming her. One of the bloggers at AfterEllen reviewed her book. Very positive:

http://www.afterellen.com/blog/stuntdouble/more-than-visibility-chely-wr...

Dorothy Snarker also has some nice things to say:

http://dorothysurrenders.blogspot.com/2010/05/who-hell-is-chely-wright.html

And The Advocate did a pretty good interview with her:

http://www.advocate.com/Arts_and_Entertainment/Music/Chely_Wright_Countr...

From The Advocate interview, "I’m still figuring out who I am as a gay woman,“ she says, “but I am so excited about finally finding a place where I belong. I’m excited about being part of the gay community. I’ve never really felt that before.”

100% agree

I've seen some bullshit on the web but lesbians tearing down another woman because they don't like the way she came out is beyond fucked up. Maybe I should have seen this coming but I truly didn't expect this on this site.

hi deedee

amazing isn't it ...
when people don't get out of the closet then there pushed forced and encouraged to do get out.
( and are sometimes treated less as a human being and being less worthy if they don't )

but if and when people do step out of the closet then what?
people question there motive(Drunk reasons and/or  time schedule for doing so ?

to me people are equal no matter what & its every individuals own right and responsibility to make a choice or not.

i for one respect her for coming out, as much as i respect other for staying in.
for they are all brave !

yep

agreeing with you and deedee on this one. And whatever you do, don't go read comments on straight sites—Hate, hate, and more hate.

OK, I sat through the whole freakin' View today, including Elisabeth H. CRYING and nobody came out!  What's up with that?  I thought Chely was booked.  And then I thought, maybe Bristol Palin's coming out since she's also on, but sadly no....

I am afraid to ask but what the heck. Why was Elisabeth Hasselbeck blubbering on The View today?

She made a joke about Erin Whatever (the chick with the peephole stalker) & how he could have just waited to see her in her skimpy outfits on that celebrity dance show and avoided jail time.  She was blubbering her apology for being so insensitive.

I also read where she calls herself "mainstream" country. I'm not really sure what that means either, but evidently it means something in country music. This is interesting: this morning she was in the Top Ten of Trending Now on Yahoo. By this afternoon - nada. Let's hope the cd is a good one.

Glad she can be herself now

I'm glad she can be herself now and does not have to lie because of her dream of being a Country Music artist. Maybe she will take up the cause of Don't Ask, Don't Tell due to her support of the military and her experience of a similar unspoken policy in the CM industry.

DADT

Looks like she's already been thinking about it, Minnie:

So this Don’t Ask Don’t Tell thing…
I’m so angry about it. I’m so angry with George Bush and Dick Cheney, and if President Obama doesn’t do something — I know he’s trying and it takes time, I know he can’t flip a switch — but if he doesn’t get this done quickly, I’ll be angry with him. I know the military. I know it became in fashion to go perform for the troops after September 11th, but I did it before. I’ve been playing in military hospitals since I was a kid. I know these people. I know what they’re about. They’re about valor, integrity, teamwork, honor. We have instructed them to lie, to say they are something they are not, which is the antithesis of what the military is supposed to be. I’m so angry about it.

Good lord almighty! I'm allowing the color to grow out of my hair - roots I haven't seen for almost 4 years! Four years ago, I didn't have but about 10 gray hairs in each temple area. NOW? My entire dang head has gray hair! Lots of it! I've got one more cut to get the old color out, and gosh darn it the new color back in! Cinco de Gayo, Chely!

I am glad that she is in a 'happy, comfortable place" in her life. I guess we'll see just how wonderful country fans really are....god, country and family! Lordy, but she is a good looking woman!

I remember now why I didn't appreciate her music - cannot stand the phrase shut up and "Single White Female" got on my nerves something awful.

I'm just not getting this no other country musician has ever come out. With an announcement?  Someone want to explain that to me?

'splaining

kd lang had already moved away from country music when she officially came out. Kelly mentioned Kristen Hall; I'm not an expert, but Wright's music comes across as more traditional country than Hall's. I'm wondering if her fan base is also more traditional.

"When you look for the bad in mankind expecting to find it, you surely will." ~ Pollyanna

Kelly McCartney's picture

Don't get me started...

I got the official press release from her publicist yesterday and totally fired back an email taking umbrage with this paragraph:  “No one like me in country music has ever admitted his or her homosexuality,” says Wright. “There are gays in Nashville, but as far as anyone is led to believe, they are not those of us on magazine covers. How could I be gay? Well, I am.” With that Chely Wright sets the fearlessly candid tone that permeates her memoir, becoming the first openly gay country music artist.

I mentioned k.d. and Kristen, but I think her point is actually that no PRETTY country artist has come out. It's an arrogant, narcisistic statement to make and I told them so. I also mentioned that, while I applaud her coming out and understand the implications in certain circles, some humility might be in order because most folks have no idea who she is.

stereotypes

You read that as "pretty" I read it as "femme." Were there cover girl femme country stars who came out before she did?

I think her point is that people need to look beyond the stereotypes of what lesbians look like. And maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's a point that's been made dozens of times on this site.

Femme, girlie, pretty...

Femme, girlie, pretty... however you term it, I believe that's one she means and it's offensive. No one like that has ever come out. Dolly could've pulled it off, I bet, but didn't and never will. Yes, people need to look beyond the stereotypes, but she could have gotten to that point in a better way.

Won't you be my neighbor? @theKELword

Dolly?

Are you outing Dolly Parton? Is she a closeted feminine-appearing (since "femme", "girly", etc is offensive) lesbian?

I was being serious. I hadn't heard those rumors and was somewhat appalled that someone with insider knowledge of the industry, like Kelly, seemed to be outing her.

Kelly McCartney's picture

Yeah!

You're misreading me. I'm saying that it feels like Chely dismisses k.d. and Kristen because they were so obviously gay in their lack of femininity, and so that makes her feel justified in claiming to be the first out country music artist because she was pretty and feminine enough to be on magazine covers.

I would never out Dolly. I'm just implying that she could've pulled it off, had that been the situation.
