Nancy McKeon, record-breaking toaster oven winner, turns 46 today. Let's take a minute to reflect on the role that made her a lesbian icon as Jo Polnachek in The Facts of Life—from the motorbike to the mullet:
Her overdetermined relationship with that blonde tease, Blair, made for some good television. Beyond the fan fiction and the melodramatic youtube montages set to really-cheesy-80s-music, the Big Gay Sketch Show did its part to satirize the lesbian undercurrent of their relationship.
(Kate McKinnon as Blair, Nicole Paone as Jo)
You can even watch "minisodes" of the show that seemingly inflate the sexual chemistry between Jo and Blair—one of my favorites is "Double Standard," which, in my perverse opinion, is a portrayal of "be you/fuck you." Ie, if they can fuck each other, they might as well dress up as each other.
While no one can literally turn someone else gay, Nancy, countless generations of lesbians credit you with "helping"...to say the least. Happy Birthday!
