Hawaii's Senate Passes Civil Unions

Yesterday, Hawaii's civil union bill moved onto pro-gay Governor Neil Abercrombie's desk where he has promised to sign into law. Last July a similar bill made its way through the senate to ultimately be vetoed by then Republican Governor Linda Lingle.

Here is where we stand on gay marriage and civil unions in this country (via CNN):

Five states (CT, IA, MA, NH, VT) and the District of Columbia issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Hawaii will join New Jersey in allowing civil unions.Three states—Rhode Island, New York and Maryland—recognize same-sex marriages from other states, according to the conference.

California recognizes same-sex marriages performed during six months in 2008 after its Supreme Court granted same-sex couples the right to marry and before the passage of Proposition 8.
