House Cleaning at GLAAD, Jarrett Barrios Resigns

We've bitched and moaned about GLAAD in the past. Our main beef has been what is their mission after 20 years of radical advocacy in the media? Have they just become a big fund raising machine that has lost touch with its community?

Well as of this morning director, Jarret Barrios, was forced to resign after cutting a back room deal with AT&T: (Policio.com)

Barrios offered his letter of resignation Saturday amid a growing backlash in the gay blogosphere over GLAAD’s letter of support to the FCC for AT&T’s proposed $39 billion purchase of wireless rival T-Mobile. The letter was signed by Barrios, on behalf of GLAAD, and also by Justin Nelson, president of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

An article in POLITICO earlier this month pointed out that GLAAD was one of several liberal-leaning groups supporting AT&T’s bid that had received donations from the telecom giant — in GLAAD’s case $50,000.

Andy Towel on his blog last week traces the murky relationship between AT&T, and Barrios/GLAAD:

So, there are a few different stories here. One is that GLAAD (perhaps unsurprisingly, in this day and age) is in the pocket of AT&T, arguing for a merger that would likely serve to support a very serious issue (net neutrality) which GLAAD says it actively opposes. The other is that confusion at the organization is contributing to bungled messaging on an issue that many wonder why GLAAD is even involved with in the first place — as the defamation and media watchdog for the LGBT community.

LGBT activists across the web are calling for a full house cleaning at GLAAD (as well as other big orgs/"Gay Ink"), that this incident is merely the tip of the iceberg... or as they say the fish stinks from the head down.

WTF, glaad

didn't know anything about this, but DAYYYYUM. glad this isn't getting swept under the rug. net neutrality is about as un-glamorous as things that are important to the queer community get, but motherfucking FUCK if I'm gonna sit back and let the national LGBT chamber of commerce screw the rest of us for their piece of the dirty-money pie.

also: "the fish stinks from the head down?" who exactly says this? (baby fishmouth, lolllz...)

"We're all born naked. The rest is drag."
