Maddow on Ellen...Her Show, That Is....

So, Rachel Maddow was on Ellen's show this afternoon -- talking about the hyper-sexualization of women in the media....

....ummmmm.....and, on that note (!), here's the gloriousness of Maddow on Ellen:

You're welcome.

There's something just, I

There's something just, I don't know...WEIRD about them being on stage together.  Can't quite wrap my head around it.

perhaps because they are from

perhaps because they are from two opposite ends of the lesbian universe? i can't imagine them having much to say to each other, really.

PS: how AMAZEBALLS is RM's Pee Wee Herman laugh?

So utterly!

Hmm...Are they from opposite

Hmm...Are they from opposite ends of the lesbian universe?  I do agree that they don't have much to say to one another, but I think it's more the (slightly vapid) Hollywood/LA vs. New York intellectual thing.  And that comparison ain't exactly flattering to Ellen...

I'm not out to defend LA or

I'm not out to defend LA or exalt NY but I wouldn't say that Ellen is vapid. It takes a lot of smarts to make good comedy. You have to see people in a unique way to be able to poke fun at human nature without being a jerk. But politics doesn't seem to be Ellen's thing so maybe that's where her discomfort comes in.

oy, you're right. i guess

oy, you're right. i guess perhaps it could be read as a la/nyc thing -- which still have the la person looking a bit vapid Smile

I notice the

I notice the strangeness/awkwardness too, but I felt there was some of the same awkwardness when Ellen interviewed Anderson Cooper and another news person I forget the name of.  I think it is awkward to have to go from lightheartedly punking entertainers and asking about their love-life to interviewing someone whose whole public life is all about serious issues.  The contrast is just more visible here because Ellen and Rachel are both in the same celebrity-butch-lesbian category, so you can't blame awkwardness on "he's a guy" or "she's straight" or some other thing.

I think it is a good thing that Ellen does sometimes interview people who aren't entertainment or everyman hero celebrities.

I was thinking this

though I do wonder if Ellen has far stronger opinions, than she lets on, on that boring, childish show Smile

yeah, I'm a bad lesbian..

(I just wanted to say that I love this photo of RM meeting S Palin.  It's a classic.)

Right :)

Talk about capturing a moment in time!  Bless that photographer.

I love JR's photo, too! I

I love JR's photo, too! I think Palin has a crush on RM....what else could that surprised face connote?!?

I agree with you, JR ---

I agree with you, JR --- although, I think Ellen's been very strategic. Her show seems to have this long term plan to talk about more and more gay things, take stronger and stronger opinions, etc etc.

Perhaps having RM on the program signifies a move in that direction?

Joanne Robertson's picture

I hope so

and I see the strategy.  Ellen's certainly been very successful - infiltrating middle America & conservative homes with her adorableness.

I watched an interview with her the other day, where she talked about how those viewers love her, yet these are the same people who vote against marriage & other rights.

There's a disconnect there and I can't help but think that disconnect exists because her show is just so safe, so asexual.  Despite the lesbian attire, they're rarely challenged.

I love Ellen, and I recognise all she's done.  I just wish she'd push the envelope a wee bit more.  Take it up a notch :)  9 seasons have not resulted in much lesbian talent or projects, being promoted to her huge audience.  Smile

SMBrown's picture

I honestly don't think

I honestly don't think Ellen's self-censoring that much.  I think she IS kinda conservative and asexual, and I don't think she has another notch to take it up to.  It's clear she really cares what other people think of her--did you see how horrified she was that Rachel gets hate mail?  Whereas Rachel has the kind of self-possession that just allows criticism to roll off her.

Marcie Bianco's picture

that's true.  I just wish

that's true.

I just wish she'd stop giving heteros all that free shit -- it's like, hey, Ellen, there are plenty of homos who need some moolah and free stuff!

like THIS GUY!

Exactly

ha!

this needs to happen....need

this needs to happen....need to get the trust-fund, freewheeling hipsters behind it -- they have the time and the money to make RM our first gay lady prez!
