In Memoriam: Cheryl B 1972–2011

The New York queer community lost a fierce, brilliant friend last weekend. Friends at Vp mourn Cheryl B's passing and celebrate her life.

Cheryl Burke (known as Cheryl B in the community) was a poet, writer, editor, and organizer who burst out on the slam poet circuit back in the 90s at the Nuyorican Poets Café. More recently she was the organizer of the raucous NY reading series, Sideshow: A Queer Literary Carnival, with Sinclair Sexsmith and was at work on a memoir about her life. Her poetry has been widely-published and anthologized in volumes like Word Warriors: 35 Women Leaders in the Spoken Word Revolution (Seal Press, 2007), Pills, Thrills, Chills and Heartache: Adventures in the First Person (Alyson Books), and others. Cheryl's work garnered many awards, including an Honorable Mention in 2009 from the Astraea Writers Fund. This year Cheryl was featured as one of GO Magazine's 100 Women We Love. Cheryl was also a beloved poetry instructor at the Gotham Writers Workshop in NYC.

Cheryl and her partner celebrated queer comic Kelli Dunham collaborated on a number of wonderful NY events and tours over the past few years. There will be a memorial for Cheryl on July 23rd at Dixon Place. The final Sideshow reading will be on July 12 at Phoenix Bar.

Can't help but think: only

Can't help but think: only the good die young.  My deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved her.

While this is an incredibly sad event, not the least of which being she passed away so young, But I want to say she left an incredible body of work, and a community who absolutely adores her.

That is a beautiful legacy to create in one short lifetime.
