Obama Heckled Over DADT

Appearing at a DNC fundraiser for Barbara Boxer yesterday, POTUS got heckled by GetEQUAL the same org that helped organize Lt Choi's White House gate-gate.

This from Pam's House Blend:

GetEQUAL protesters have been escorted out of an Obama fundraiser in LA for Barbara Boxer after demanding that he add repeal language in the Defense Authorization. According to press pool reports, at 6:17 Pacific Time, members of GetEqual interrupted the President's speech to expressing anger over the snail's pace on DADT repeal and the the stories that the White House doesn't want a vote in 2010.

"What about don't ask, don't tell?" one protester shouted. Obama yelled back "we are going to do that." The President raised his voice to try to continue over the protesters, with the crowd trying to drown them out by chanting "Yes, we can." He later said, "we are going to repeal don't ask, don't tell."

Supporting Boxer = furthering gay rights

A big step to replealing DADT and furthering gay rights would be re-electing Boxer, which is why Obama was there.  NOM is making a big push to defeat the moderate Republican in the race and is sure to spend mucho bucks on the general election.  Whether lazy or not, yelling about DADT in this setting misses the target by a mile...

Some, who comment here, may find it personally empowering to insult the protesters - but others may view that as dismissive, and rather condescending. Demonstrating, by it's nature, is meant to bring about dialogue. And, regardless of what we may personally feel, they did just that. Whether I may personally agree with their methodology doesn't really matter; what counts is that they're expressing themselves. Their goal is to be seen, heard, and affect change.

It's presumptuous for any of us to assume that the protesters haven't also been pro-active in the traditional, and more conservative forms of protest, i.e., calling, emailing, writing letters, etc.

All Americans have a right to protest in the manner they feel best supports their goals. And, if one looks throughout history, we'll see that it takes input from a myriad of individuals to affect a change to the status quo.

I support the protesters, and thank them for keeping the dialogue alive... Without the voices of dissension [even within the ranks], where would the LGBT community be right now?  I'm afraid that we'd be living with 1950's equality, and justice. Or, even worse.

Until LGBT equality is the law of the land, and until we have full constitutional protections and not simply promises.....then, different forms of protest are necessary and equally valid.

Of course, this is only my opinion.

wrong on so many counts

They are being seen, heard, and choosing one of the least effective ways in the arsenal of political activism to effect change. And pointing out the ineffectiveness of shouting down politicians who are on our side is not dismissive — it's being a realist.

I will also state categorically that I fully support their right to protest in any Constitutionally protected way they see fit. (No matter how feckless.). And since I happen to be a US Army veteran I'd like to point out that my service in the Army in part secured those rights.

And finally, the heckler's veto by its very nature has nothing to do with "keeping dialogue alive." In this case it looks like they were just trying to embarrass the president.

Wrong in your eyes. Not others.

Quite the contrary Rusty. I have several close friends who attended the event, and thanks to the vocal 'protesters', repealing DADT was the discussion of the entire evening. Boxer secured her donations, and the urgency of repealing DADT was highlighted.

A usually boring, back patting, ass kissing, political fund raiser, actually has brought about dialogue between people concerning the urgency of repealing DADT. I don't see policy makers discussing important issues as a bad thing...

Dinner conversation

Please understand, I'm not just speaking of the 'media' portion of the larger event. There was also a dinner that some donors attended. The topic of DADT's repeal, was discussed.

I'm simply relaying what I've been told.

Scream at the guy who's on our side and has already promised to sign the legislation. Way to go.

I'm going to piss a bunch of people off but I don't care. This is lazy activism. How about doing some of the hard work instead? Organize calls to members of the committees that have jurisdiction. Lobby straight allies and get them to call. Write letters to the editor and explain why it's in America's national security interests to lift the ban. You know the boring stuff that doesn't get you on TV but actually works.

Does anyone even realize that ENDA will probably come out of committee this week or early next week? Do you know where your Senators and Representatives stand? Have you called them?

Tiff, sweetheart! (to Tiff on the bottom)

You know, that pacing dove on this third story railing actually worried me a bit. I was sitting here thinking....is this a good sign or a bad sign? Talked myself into believing the good sign! Just so you'll know, the chick is back on the ground with her partner. I'm relieved......

Danged if he does....

Danged if he doesn't! POTSU gets heckled on ALL fronts! Actually, there's a part of me that thinks it's rude, but then there's also a part of me that's damned tired and fed up with the rhetoric like everyone else!

Okay, this is weird....just looked out on the balcony - third floor - there is a dove pacing back and forth on the railing! No shit! There's a dove pacing back and forth on this third floor balcony! Wow! it's cooing at me!

Doves mean peace....
