flashbacks/hallucinations, we see Karen winning out in his mind. He calls the whole team back in, and tells Karen she’s going on as Marilyn. Everyone’s shocked by the decision—and Ivy’s obviously devastated—and this sets the stage for the rest of the episode. (Hint: there’s a lot more of the production team yelling at each other.) Boston hasn’t been a particularly great experience for Ivy; Derek has broken her heart in every way possible, and she has a right to be upset. Unlike Ellis, who just needs to shut up already.

For someone attempting to work his way up the totem pole by kissing the right ass at the right time, Ellis is surprisingly bad at sensing whether or not the timing’s right in this instance. He storms after Eileen, whining that it’s Ivy’s part, and he wants her to fix it. She calmly informs him (I love Eileen) that he doesn’t get a vote on the matter, and suggest he go on a coffee run (burn!) and he totally flips. In the heat of the moment, he confesses to essentially poisoning Rebecca (can he be stuck in jail for attempted murder, please?) and Eileen fires him. (Cue choirs of angels here, please.) She tells him to get out of her theatre and he promises “you haven’t heard the last of this.” (Yes, of course it’s too good to be true.) At the very least, it’s all we have to see of him for this episode.


Meanwhile, rehearsals with the new Marilyn are not going well. Karen’s costumes don’t fit, she doesn’t know the blocking, and then the lights go out—it’s not exactly the reassurance the team is looking for, hours before a performance. Michael pulls Julia aside, tells her that she “doesn’t have to run away,” and that his wife left him. Frank sees the exchange, and while he knows it’s nothing, he’s still clearly uncomfortable with the whole situation. He and Julia come to the conclusion that they’re going to have to settle for knowing “that the good [in their relationship] is more than the mistakes,” and go back inside, as Leo arrives with lunch. (Where did Julia find her song titles before her marriage was on the rocks?)


Rehearsals continue, and they’re looking a bit better—well, to everyone but Ivy, who is standing backstage, remembering the
