Stretch, Relax, Breathe: Headstand, step 1

Headstand is probably one of the most important poses of Hatha Yoga. The great yoga master BKS Iyengar called it the "father of all asanas".

Inversion poses, which are basically all the poses that turn you upside down, are soooo good for you. In the most general way it brings balance to the body and the mind by bringing blood to the pituitary and pineal glands in the brain. This isn't merely "yoga speak", In fact, there are scientific studies which have shown that Inversion poses relieve depression.

Granted we are all not ready to flip over and lift our legs in the air. In order to begin the process of going into headstand, we must first build up some upper body strength. One of the most important tricks of this pose is NOT to put pressure on the neck! The elbows and forearms play and important role in finding our balance in this pose. So today's video we will go through a strengthening series by doing "Dolphin Pose."
