“Are You Still a Slave?” was the discussion during the week-long Bell Hooks Residency at the New School, paneled by Bell Hooks, trans-activist Janet Mock, author Marci Blackman, and filmmaker Shola Lynch.

According to Dr Hooks the topics covered “must be understood as interconnected and linked in the production of systems of oppression and class domination.” This residency hosted by the New School is meant to engage the community directly with Dr. Hooks whose unequivocally commitment to feminism particularly the black female body is a source of empowerment for all women.

Hooks’ biting criticism of the acclaimed movie “12 Years A Slave” identifies precisely dispositions of the black female body most of society blindly accepts or carelessly ignores. Below Hooks’ comments, “If I never see another naked, enslaved, raped black woman on screen I’ll be happy.” And that is just the tip of the iceberg of this engaging discussion.
