As most of you on Velvetpark know, I came out to my commanders last week at West Point and submitted my formal letter of resignation. I was officially discharged on Friday 13AUG2010 from the academy and the Army.
I’ve cried in my friend’s arms, received hateful messages through cadet email, pretended to be unfazed by disapproving glances on post, and had my integrity questioned by people I don’t even know.
But simultaneously, male cadets have apologized for putting me in compromising position with their romantic approaches. I’ve become acquainted with heroes like LTC Fehrenbach and CPT Jonathan Hopkins. Both civilian and military personnel have offered me overwhelming political and personal support through email, Facebook, and phone calls. And most rewarding, LGB cadets have thanked me for giving them a voice.
It’s been an absolute whirlwind of events. How fortunate I am to have a blog to therapeutically articulate these experiences. Thank you, Velvetpark, for all the support. Stay tuned.
