Taylor Mead 1923 – 2013

Possibly the last true bohemian of New York passed away this Wednesday. Taylor Mead was a poet, artist, filmmaker and downtown icon.

Possibly the last true bohemian of New York passed away this Wednesday. Taylor Mead was a poet, artist, filmmaker and downtown icon. He is best known for conceiving, collaborating, and starring in several Andy Warhol films in the late 1960’s.

Mead had lived in the same East Village apartment for the last 34 years where he tooled around the LES feeding stray cats and performed regularly at the Bowery Poetry Club.

We were fortunate enough to catch his final art show just last year at Churner and Churner where he conducted a lively artist talk after a screening of one of his early films.

Early in the 60’s Mead along with Warhol put the queer in the New York art scene. May you rest in peace.
